Dr Rodney Syme has described his final moments with Bernard Erica, a terminally-ill patient who died after taking a life-ending drug.

on 7 March, 2016 ABC’s “Australian Story” was introduced by journalist Caroline Jones AO as the story of Dr Rodney Syme, “a doctor who believes the terminally ill, and those with unbearable pain and suffering, should have a choice about when to end their lives. For more than two decades, Dr Rodney Syme has been campaigning to legalise voluntary euthanasia. It’s an issue that polarises the medical community. At the age of 80, Dr Syme says that time is running out for him to see the law changed – and he’s decided to risk everything, even if it means going to prison. This is his story.” The program told the story of terminally-ill Bernard Erica and how Dr Syme had given him the peace of mind to enjoy his final months.
