Our Spring newsletter with the latest news from Australia and overseas
Our Spring 2021 Newsletter aims to bring everyone up-to-date with the latest developments from across Australia and around the world.
The COVID crisis and state-wide lockdown have delayed our campaign for voluntary assisted dying (VAD) laws here in New South Wales. Are we disappointed? Yes. Are we defeated? Absolutely not. It is certainly a setback but we are hopeful that as soon as Parliament resumes, Alex Greenwich MP will be able to introduce his VAD Bill and, if everything goes to plan, the Bill could still pass before Christmas.
The pandemic, however, hasn’t stopped progress in other states. South Australia passed its VAD Bill in June with an unexpectedly strong majority, including support from the Liberal Premier. In Queensland, debate of their VAD Bill commences on Tuesday 14 September and it is expected to pass quite quickly.
This newsletter also includes a report on the continuing grassroots campaign in NSW and our wonderful volunteers, as well as other campaign strategies including plans for a Field of Hearts event to take the place of a rally.
We also have a very interesting special feature by Melbourne oncologist Dr Phillip Parente, a one-time conscientious objector, who changed his position on VAD and has now helped dozens of patients access the Victorian scheme.
