MAID Act passes Hawai’i Senate

In a full floor vote, the Hawai‘i Senate today voted 22 to 3 to approve Senate Bill 1129, the Medical Aid in Dying Act, and refer it to the House of Representatives for further consideration. SB1129 SD1 is modelled on the Oregon statute and includes safeguards to protect patients from misuse. In the bill ‘terminally ill’ is defined as ‘the final stage of an incurable or irreversible medical condition that has been medically confirmed and will, within reasonable medical judgment, result in death within six months,’ Not since 2002 have the Hawaiians seen a medical aid in dying bill progress this far in the Legislature.
