12-year-old tells Prime Minister her yiayia has the right to die
As part of a project at Clifton Hill Primary School (Victoria), grade six student Aristea has written to Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, demanding he change the law regarding voluntary euthanasia. In a strongly worded three-page letter, Aristea pleads the case for people like her grandmother, who has chronic illness and is responding poorly to medication and unfit to have surgery. Aristea’s 79-year-old grandmother is growing weak, becoming bedridden for weeks at a time and has told her family she no longer wants to endure the severe, relentless pain of untreatable osteoarthritis. She feels anxious about the next time her pain will become unbearable, and says wants the option to put a stop to it.
